GBC Member Project of the
Month
Wells College in Aurora, New York celebrated the completion of its new
science building, Ann Wilder Stratton ’46 Hall, in September. Designed
in harmony with the campus’ existing historic buildings, the 47,000-sq.
ft. facility was constructed on a challenging shale slope.
Stratton Hall’s two-story, light-filled atrium echoes the spirals of a
nautilus shell, one of many scientific artifacts on display. By
incorporating open meeting areas and blackboards into the building’s
main thoroughfare, the atrium maximizes the facility’s teaching space. A
more secluded room on the upper floor of the structure offers students
and visitors a quiet space to study or meet.
A 92-seat lecture hall, used for classes, colloquia and lectures across
the disciplines, boasts a state-of-the-art multimedia system. A
sophisticated HVAC system was installed to support the eight specialized
laboratories and their adjacent research and prep rooms. “Smart”
classrooms round out the teaching facilities, featuring wall-to-wall
blackboards and computer projection capabilities. Custom millwork,
windows and landscaping beautify computer labs and faculty offices as
well as the building’s open spaces.
The Wells science building was designed by
