In the mid-1950’s a group of general building contractors from throughout New York State met to explore the formation of a statewide full service general contractor’s organization that could represent their business interests before public and private owners, architects, engineers, government, labor and others associated with the construction industry. They had one goal in mind:

Equity for the general contractor in his business dealings, wherever they may be, so as to provide the public and private client with a quality product at a competitive price. That continues to be our mission today.

From those early discussions, the GBC was formed with 20 charter contractor members in 1956. Forty-five years later, the GBC has grown to become a strong and respected leader of the construction industry in New York.

Today, the GBC represents about 180 general contractors and construction managers throughout New York State. They are small and large (to include many Members on ENR’s Top 400 list), regionally dispersed throughout New York, active in public and private markets (mostly building, but some in other market categories), and are of all labor relations types. In addition, we have over 100 Associate Members in the fields of law, insurance, bonding, financial services, consulting, supply and the like. In 1999 we began to accept subcontractor members on an experimental basis, and are pleased to currently count about 20 subcontractors as members.

The Membership has one thing in common: QUALITY. The GBC is comprised of quality contractors providing competitive quality products to public and private owners in New York State. The GBC continues to provide substantive and timely services and programs in the same fashion. The continuing support of our Membership even in troubled economic times reinforces the importance of the Association’s mission.

Every good organization, whether a business or an association like the GBC, needs to think strategically. Over its 50-year history, GBC has often engaged in some kind of long-term planning. In January 2006, the GBC Board met for a day in Albany, with the help of a nationally respected association consultant and strategic planning facilitator, to review the GBC’s 2003 plan and develop a new one for 2006 that will give us direction for the next three years.
