American
Institute of Constructors
The GBC of New York State and the AGC of America support the AIC as the premiere certification of the professional constructor.
The purpose of The American Institute of Constructors (AIC) is to promote individual professionalism and excellence throughout the related fields of construction.
The Importance of Constructor Certification
The management of construction has changed and expanded dramatically in the
20th Century. These changes have resulted in increased responsibilities and obligations for the Professional Constructor. In an effort to recognize the unique technical and managerial knowledge and skills required today, the American Institute of Constructors (AIC) Certification Commission qualifies individuals through education, experience and examination for the professional designations of Associate Constructor (AC) and Certified Professional Constructor (CPC).
The Associate Constructor (AC) designation recognizes the first step of the successful candidate's progress toward achieving Certified Professional Constructor (CPC) status. A candidate who meets the educational requirements and passes the first
examination - Construction Fundamentals - CQE Level 1 - will be designated as an Associate Constructor (AC) and receive a certificate of confirmation by the Commission.
Adding professional managerial experience to the educational requirement for (AC) status, the
Certified Professional Constructor (CPC) designation is awarded to individuals who possess the skills and knowledge acquired through both education and experience to manage the execution of a substantial part of construction works.
AIC's History with Constructor Certification
The AIC has been qualifying the Constructor through examination of experience and education since its inception in 1971. In 1994, the AIC Constructor Certification Commission was organized under the auspices of the AIC to expand the qualifying process with a written examination and to offer an internationally recognized certification process to AIC members and nonmembers alike. The certification process is peer developed with the goal of setting high standards for the skills, knowledge, education and conduct of the Certified Constructor.
